FOOTBALL: THE ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP FINAL TIE.The Crystal Palace ground presented a most striking sight on Saturday, April ioth, 1897, when the two well-known professional teams of Aston Villa and Everton met in the Final Tie of this competition. No less than 65,000 spectators are officially recorded as having been present, a number which testifies, if evidence were needed, to the enormous popularity of the great winter game. The match which is here represented ended in favour of Aston Villa by three goals to two. The Cup was after the match presented to the captain of the winning team by the Earl of Rosebery, who, in the course of a short speech, observed that he was sure that the game served to bring out those splendid characteristics of the British racestaying power and indomitable pluck.
