Artist: Leon EvansAbout the Artist:Leon Evans studied at Stourbridge College of Art in the West Midlands and then on to the North East Wales Institute of Technology and Art developing techniques in all medium – oils, pencil crayon, watercolour and became their first student to have work accepted by the Association of Illustrators for their “Images” annual and exhibition in Covent Garden. He worked as an Illustrator in London and as a graphic artist in Birmingham before forming a visualising agency in Manchester working on projects for major blue chip accounts and advertising agencies nation wide. In 1991 he set up his company Spiral Gallery and with a great interest in portraiture began by publishing a series of limited edition prints entitled Legends for premier and first division football clubs depicting the great players throughout the ages. Since then his fluent watercolour sporting images of football, boxing and motor racing have become very popular. A great interest in wildlife has also inspired a series of animal pencil studies where his challenge is not only to capture the intricate detail within the texture and form of the animal, but also a little bit of its individual personality and character. His work is now recognised amongst collectors throughout the UK and internationally. FOOTBALL: THE ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP FINAL TIE.The Crystal Palace ground presented a most striking sight on Saturday, April ioth, 1897, when the two well-known professional teams of Aston Villa and Everton met in the Final Tie of this competition. No less than 65,000 spectators are officially recorded as having been present, a number which testifies, if evidence were needed, to the enormous popularity of the great winter game. The match which is here represented ended in favour of Aston Villa by three goals to two. The Cup was after the match presented to the captain of the winning team by the Earl of Rosebery, who, in the course of a short speech, observed that he was sure that the game served to bring out those splendid characteristics of the British racestaying power and indomitable pluck.
