Publisher Description When Everton became founder members of the Football League they were already 10 years old. Since then they've clocked up a record 108 seasons in the top flight and cemented their position as one of the most famous football clubs in the world. Legends such as Dixie Dean (still the only player in English football to have scored 60 League goals in one season), the prolific Tommy Lawton (65 goals in 87 games) and 500-game goalkeeper Ted Sagar gave them early success. The Sixties was a successful decade in which Everton won the FA Cup in 1966 and the League Championship in 1962-63 and 1969-70 under the assured guidance of manager Harry Catterick. The midfield trio of Alan Ball, Howard Kendall and Colin Harvey earned Everton the reputation of football's 'School of Science', while their home, Goodison Park, hosted World Cup matches in 1966. The era re-ignited their rivalry with Liverpool, the club 'across the park', and bustling centre-forwards like Joe Royle and Bob Latchford ensured the Blues gave as good as they got while keepers like Gordon West and Andy Rankin did their best to keep clean sheets at the other end.
This book brings the club's rich, varied history to life with pictures of the major games and chief personalities that made Everton great. It takes the story from 1878 all the way up to the club's fifth FA Cup win in 1995, their last major honour to date. The Daily Mirror's extensive archive of images has been scoured to provide hundreds of nostalgic photos, many previously unpublished, that give a new dimension to the Everton experience, while facts, figures and anecdotes abound. Notes Using an unrivalled collection of photographs from the Daily Mirror's extensive archives, this reveals the full story of Everton FC, concentrating on the forgotten stories, the highs, the lows and the personalities of the club. Everton Greatest Games: The Toffees' Fifty Finest Matches
Product Details Hardcover: 208 pages Publisher: Pitch Publishing Ltd; First edition (2 Oct. 2017) Language: English ISBN-10: 1785313142 ISBN-13: 41 Product Dimensions: 15.9 x 2.3 x 24.1 cm #18 in FC Everton #371 in History of Sports (Books) Review “Superbly captures the crowd’s involvement in these great games. Thepacked terraces, the atmosphere, noise, energy and bedlam. The anticipationand ‘sense of occasion’ of supporters who have witnessed something special.Re-live the tension, anguish and relief. An emotional rollercoaster which fansof all clubs will relate to.” –ItsRoundAndItsWhite.co.uk”Jim has not onlygiven a fantastic account of some of the crucial games not just within our ownliving memory, but more impressively still of games in the prewar era where hehas had to use historical data to paint a romantic and thorough picture of thehistory of the club.” –Grand Old Team “Not only will this beautifully puttogether publication take a large number of fans on a trip down memory lane,it also acts as a reference book for those too young to remember many of theclub’s fine achievements and, although recent form might suggest that a secondedition is some way off, until then this is a must-have for Evertonianseverywhere.” –The Sportsman”An outstanding and entertaining read throughout.Jim Keoghan superbly takes you on a journey through some of Everton’s finestmoments. Through the many highs, and occasional lows, the book reminds everyEvertonian what makes the club so special.” –The Toffee Blues”Keoghan’s booktakes us on a trip through the weird and wonderful world of Evertonia, including that magical night against Munich in 1985, loads of derby-dayvictories (remember them?) and those final-day scraps with Wimbledon andCoventry City. In many ways, it s the sequel to Jim’s first book (which everyEvertonian should own) and could’ve been called Highs, Near-Lows and Oviedos.”–When Skies Are Grey”As a pleasant jaunt down memory lane this book ticks allthe necessary boxes, and with Christmas just around the corner, it would makethe ideal stocking filler for the nostalgic Evertonian in your life.” –TheFootball Pink “By being told through the prism of matches, it s a much morevisceral representation of the club’s past. An official history covered inmud, spit and sawdust.” –Royal Blue Mersey”A glorious nostalgia trip, a must-read for Blues of all ages.” –Brian Viner, author of Looking for the Toffees:In Search of the Heroes of Everton”A fantastic book with fantastic memories ofsome of the best times of my life.” –Toffee TV”Humorous, tragic and euphoric- sometimes in the space of just a few pages – Jim Keoghan’s work is a mustread for both the ardent Evertonian, and regular football supporters wantingto find out more about one of British football’s traditional elites.” –TheBlue Room”The inclusion of memories and experience of a range of people, including players, supporters, historians and even in some cases oppositionfans, provides and insightful and rounded analysis of each match, its contextand its significance. This is what makes the book stand out from similarefforts.” –The Black Watch”Buy Everton Greatest Games: The Toffees’ FiftyFinest Matches for someone this Christmas so that they can learn even moreabout our proud history.” –When Skies Are Grey”Supporting Everton is alifetime commitment to follow the team through good times and bad. Althoughthere isn’t always a happy ending, you wouldn’t have it any other way. That’sthe message contained within Jim Keoghan’s latest book. There are gloriousvictories but also some inglorious defeats.” –Royal Blue Mersey blog Aboutthe Author Jim Keoghan is the author of Highs, Lows and Bakayokos, the storyof Everton in the 1990s. For good or ill, Jim has been an avid Blue since, aged six, he saw Everton beat Birmingham City 3-1. Since then, he’s enjoyedand endured pleasure and misery (mostly the latter) at Everton’s hands, andhas learned that writing about its past is a great way to remember just what amagnificent football club this really is.
