Truly amazing images.
This is an incredible, once in a lifetime reel. One of a kind.
This is an incredible reel. Imagine Vivian Maier fused with Jan Sudek – but moving images not still.
Envisage Ray-Jones on market day or Jimmy Forsyth documenting street games.
A shot of forlorn flowers on a crumbling, exterior window sill screams Tilmans.
This is an amateur film that stands head and shoulders above most home movies of the time. Firstly, it was shot in 16mm not 8mm or super 8 so the clarity is stunning.
Then there’s the length. At 16fps you’re looking at approximately 32 minutes of celluloid. That’s far from the usual, shaky 3 minutes of over-excited nippers running in a playground that you get with most found footage.
This footage was created by a filmmaker. Or aspiring filmmaker. The quality is just too good to be otherwise.
From the retention of sharp focus throughout, to the steady hand to the stunning composition, this camera boss had an eye for image capture.
Not sure exactly where this was filmed. Markets feature heavily so it could be Portobello, Brick Lane, Petticoat Lane. No idea. The one recognisable location is Piccadilly Circus but more of that later.
It starts off as most home movies do, with children playing in the back garden. Nothing too extraordinary there. Then it’s off to the beach and a spot of camping too. It’s here where things take a turn. A confusing image turns out to be filming between the soles of a woman’s feet. And the motif is set. A style that runs through the reel as many subjects are not shot up front and centre.
A child at the camp site is shot beautifully through a hole torn into a slice of Mother’s Pride.
People are viewed between other people. Shots framed by heads, or shoulders. Alongside dangling arms in the foreground. Disembodied shots. Wounds, bandaged folk hold the filmmakers attention. Close, cropped images of house-slippered feet out on the street. Or next to saloon bars waiting to be served – but we do not see who the feet belong to.
This is a reel about masses. Not individuals. Folk who are part of something. The street gang of playing youths. The bold stall holders keeping court to passers-by. The tavern imbibers. The market shoppers. The workers heading home. Safety in numbers.
Sparse. Space only appears on side streets as children go-kart or play headers and volleys.
Who knew what was to come later this year at the height of the swinging sixties. 1966. The World Cup win was around the corner. Most people think Everton’s contribution to football in this year was hosting the likes of Pele and Eusebio in the early rounds. But before the World Cup had even held its opening ceremony, the Toffees had contested an FA Cup final at Wembley.
And here is the footage to prove it as their fans take over Piccadilly Circus.
Beyond the jubilant scousers in home-made bonnets, this reel is jam-packed with amazing images. You could glean hundreds of incredible stills from this reel. Hovercraft launches, mighty mods, Ray the rocker, grubby-faced street urchins, pet dogs, street performers, posh boys in vintage cars, ne’er do well youths with black-eyes, it’s all here.

NB: The freeze frame has been used for some images but the projector lamp dims when on freeze frame so the images in the photos will appear brighter when projected by you at speed. Also, the smudge and spots you sometimes see in the same place in the images are caused by my camera, these are not on the film print. This reel is sold as is, NO RETURNS.
